Introducing Scavenger Mine, the next phase of NIGHT token distribution

Midnight Foundation

Following the success of Glacier Drop, Scavenger Mine opens an even wider door to the Midnight community. This second phase of the NIGHT token distribution begins October 30. Pre-registration is now open, inviting everyone to participate in a 21-day global event, solving computational challenges as part of a global community.

Each stage of the NIGHT token distribution is an expansion of the Midnight community. The foundation of any network is not just its code, but the people who use it, build on it, and contribute to its vision.

The first phase of the NIGHT token distribution, Glacier Drop, was a foundational step in bringing this community together. With over 3.5 billion NIGHT tokens claimed by more than 170,000 addresses across eight distinct ecosystems, the response validated the core strategy: to forge a large, diverse, and engaged community from the very beginning.

Now, the doors are being opened even wider to anyone who wants to participate.

The Midnight Foundation is excited to announce that Scavenger Mine, the second phase of the NIGHT token distribution, will open now with participants able to start completing computational challenges at midnight (00:00 UTC) on October 30. This is the next stage in the roadmap announced in the tokenomics and incentives whitepaper and it is an open invitation to everyone to participate in the network’s foundation.

This phase is designed for maximum accessibility, embodying the spirit of an open and fair network. It requires no complex technical experience, no specialized software, and no previous ecosystem affiliation. Anyone with a web browser on a desktop or laptop can participate.

The growing community

Scavenger Mine is a 21-day global event where the community participates in a game solving computational challenges.

This is an opportunity to participate in Scavenger Mine along with the rest of the global community. By participating, individuals are participating as foundational members of the Midnight ecosystem.

All unclaimed tokens from Phase 1 (Glacier Drop) are now being reallocated between Scavenger Mine participants, core network constituents, and the final Lost-and-Found claim phase.

For Scavenger Mine, 626,300,299 NIGHT tokens are allocated for participants.

How to join

The process is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly. Participation takes place entirely within a browser window on a desktop or laptop computer (smartphones are not supported).

Pre-registration begins one day before Scavenger Mine opens. While pre-registration is optional, and anyone can register and join at any time during the 21 day cycle, pre-registration allows participants to register their unused Cardano Destination address in advance, so they are ready to start the moment the event goes live.

Here is how to get started once the portal opens:

  • Register: Access the portal (via midnight.gd) and connect an Unused verified Cardano wallet or enter your Destination address manually. Participants can then read and accept the Token End User Agreement.
  • Sign: A unique claim message must be signed. This message binds the participant's Destination address and an acceptance of the Token End User Agreement to their current browser session, securing participation.
  • Start: From October 30 onwards, click 'Start' to begin processing solutions to the computational challenges. The app will run seamlessly in the browser as long as the device and browser remain active.

To maximize a potential allocation, the application can be run in a browser for the full 24-hour period each day.

21 daily cycles

To ensure fairness and reward consistent participation over the full duration of Scavenger Mine, the 21-day event is divided into 21 independent 24-hour claim cycles.

  • Daily Cycles: Each cycle begins daily at 00:00 UTC.
  • Daily Token Pool: The total Scavenger Mine allocation is divided equally across these 21 cycles. This means 29,823,823 NIGHT tokens available in each 24-hour cycle.
  • How Allocation is Determined: At the end of each cycle, a snapshot is taken. A participant's allocation for that cycle is proportional to the number of solutions they contributed relative to the total solutions contributed by all participants during that same 24-hour period.

This calculation is unique to each cycle and a participant must contribute at least one solution in a cycle to receive an allocation for it. This model rewards participants for their engagement, day by day. During the event, a new cryptographic challenge will be issued every hour (504 challenges in total) for participants to solve.

Expanding the global Midnight community

Scavenger Mine is another step forward in cultivating the decentralized, global community that will shape the network's future. This open, fair, and accessible event directly supports the Foundation's work: stewarding the Midnight network and fostering the global community around it.

The Foundation celebrates this expansion. It is incredibly exciting to see the community grow and to welcome a new wave of participants who will help build this new, privacy-enhancing fourth generation blockchain.
